Cluster Flies a sign of spring

There’s still snow on the ground, and it’s still cold outside, but those calm sunny days wake up those cluster flies and we can see them zooming around the house and shop.

These flies move into your house in the fall thorough cracks and small openings on the exterior walls. They stay dormant throughout the winter because their body temperature goes down as the temperature around them decreases. As soon as they warm up they are on the move again. What makes cluster flies such a pest is that they all start to move at the same time, and create a hum in the attic and as they find cracks to squeeze through, their presence is soon found in your living area.

To help avoid these pests try to seal off as many openings as you can, but it is almost impossible to eliminate them entirely.

They can be treated, and usually take one treatment in the spring.

Integrated Pest Management - a green approach

Pests share this space on Earth as we do, so we live with and around them every day. The problem arises when the pest level reaches a point we are adversely affected by their presence, usually, at that point, some type of control is usually initiated. Today we make a conscious effort to be as environmentally friendly as possible, think green. The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach is the accepted method today in order to make the best possible choice to be environmentally friendly, cost conscious and still effectively control a pest.

Key components to consider before you begin to eliminate the pest are to pest identification, prevention, and threshold limits. It is imperative to know as much as possible before action is taken. If control is required methods like cultural, mechanical, biological and behavioural must be taken into consideration before the use of chemical control is considered THINK GREEN!

Often it is best to contact a qualified representative to accurately evaluate the situation, and address what is the best method to approach a pest problem. Often pest problems can be resolved much easier than it appears at first.

Winter is still upon us, and there are still many areas that rodents are invading homes to find a comfortable warm place to spend the rest of the winter.

To help prevent rodent entry, keep entry points closed, this may seem obvious during the winter, but this also refers to garage doors and all openings along the exterior of your home (ie) cracks in the cement or framework of the house. If a rodent gains entry to a garage then it is only a matter of time there will be an opportunity for that pest to enter the house. These entry points also refers to all those doors that do not have a tight seal (1/3 of an inch is enough to allow a mouse to get into your home).

Control of rodents is not an impossible task, but it requires a proper approach. Rodents can carry diseases, cause damage to your home, and create a very uncomfortable environment for the home dweller.

If you try to control rodents, you must use the “no mercy rule”. Set out many control devises, like traps, glue boards, bait stations, etc. in the suspected area.
